Did you know that different marijuana terpenes are responsible for the unique aroma, flavour, and effect of different strains? These terpenes interact with cannabinoids like THC and CBD, and these are responsible for producing different therapeutic benefits. In the blog, we will explore different marijuana terpenes and their effects.

You may have seen the sticky texture of marijuana flower, or the crystalline shimmer, along with the indulgent fragrance of the marijuana. But did you know that all of it happens due to the effect of marijuana terpenes? Terpenes are the organic compounds that you can find in a marijuana plant. If you have inhaled marijuana that has distinct flavours like sweet fruits, earthy spices, or fresh florals, you know that it is because of a distinct terpene.

You might be amazed to know that there are more than 200 terpene varieties found in cannabis plants. Scientific studies into the effect of marijuana terpenes have found that it goes beyond creating a distinct aroma in cannabis plants. As cannabinoids like THC and CBD have different effects on your body, terpenes might also have different effects.

This blog will discuss the most common cannabis terpenes.

A List of Different Terpenes and Their Effects

Take a look at the 6 topmost cannabis terpenes and learn about their effects as well:

    1. Myrcene Terpene

    Aroma: Earthy, musky

Effects: Helps relieve pain, sedative, anti-inflammatory

It is one of the common terpenes that you can find in commercial cannabis strains. Myrcene terpene can be found in approximately 20% of cannabis terpene profiles. The abundant availability of the terpene in different cannabis strains has given it the title of “Mother of all cannabis”.

With an earthy and herbal aroma, myrcene creates a unique profile of cannabis strains to refresh the moods of users. Cannabis strains that contain myrcene terpene have been used for medicinal purposes. Anti-anxiety and stress relief property helps in sleep for patients suffering from insomnia

    2. Limonene Terpene

    Aroma: Citrus

    Effects: Anti-anxiety, anti-inflammatory, useful for mood-lifting

If you prefer a cannabis strain with a citrus aroma, the Limonene terpene is responsible for creating the citrus aroma. However, the cannabis strains that contain Limonene create a strong citrus aroma. So, even if there are other terpenes in the cannabis strain, they get suppressed under the strong citrus aroma.

For example, Mendo Breath strain is one of the cannabis strains that contains citrus aroma along with other flavours (sweet grape and floral notes). Moreover, you can also try the Limoncello strain to enjoy a bright citrus note along with sweet cherry and an earthy undertone.

Cannabis strains that contain limonene are responsible for potential benefits like mood elevation, anti-bacterial properties, antifungal, etc.

    3. Pinene Terpene

    Aroma: Spicy, fresh pine, peppery

Effects: Antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, pain relief, etc.

The Pinene terpene is another one that can be found in most cannabis strains. Besides, it is one of those terpenes that the researchers have been most interested in conducting studies on. There are two varieties of Pinene terpene – Alpha-Pinene and Beta-Pinene. While the former variety is most commonly found in cannabis strains, the latter one is found in a few strains.

As you can understand from the name of the terpene, it has a pine-tree-like aroma, which is also described as earthy. To taste the earthy flavour, you can also try the Limoncello strain. It offers a blend of citrus and earthy notes when you inhale.

    4. Linalool Terpene

    Aroma: Lavender, floral

Effects: Works as a sedative, stress reliever, contains anti-anxiety properties, and gives a calming effect.

The Linalool terpene is a naturally occurring element found in different plants. However, when it is mixed with cannabinoids like CBD and THC, it offers similar effects to cannabis consumers.

Besides producing a floral aroma, it also carries a hint of spicy aroma. Research has shown a promising link between the improvement of Alzheimer’s disease and the use of cannabis strains with the Linalool terpene. Mendo Breath strain is ideal to get the therapeutic benefits of Linalool Terpene.

    5. Humulene Terpene

    Aroma: Earthy, woody

Effects: It has anti-inflammatory properties and appetite suppressant

Have you ever inhaled a cannabis strain with a distinct bitter flavour of beer hop? In ancient times, people used plants rich in humulene as a natural antibiotic and energy stimulant. In modern days, research has been going on to identify the medical benefits of humulene triterpene. In the meantime, you can enjoy the cannabis strain containing humulene terpene to boost energy and boost anti-inflammatory properties in your body.

    6. Terpinolene Terpene

    Aroma: Floral, woody

    Effects: Anti-cancer property, sedative, antioxidant

Contrary to Myrcene terpene, Terpinolene terpene is the least commonly found terpene. Several cannabis strains might contain Terpinolene in their cannabis terpene profile, but in very low quantities. You can experience a floral aroma along with a citrus note when you inhale the cannabis. Besides its usage in different medical practices, you might also experience a soothing effect on your nervous system after you inhale it.

Experiment With Different Cannabis Terpenes, Experience a Variety of Flavours

If you are a fan of marijuana and prefer to try different strains with distinct flavours, you should try strains containing the above terpenes. Cannabis strains that include the above 6 common terpenes will offer a wide range of aroma and distinct flavour.
